Volunteer Workshop

The Volunteer Workshop that took place on Jan. 9th 2010 was very informative.

The turnout was great in spite of the severe cold weather that day. Attendees showed much interest in the organization.

Overall it was very successful. Thank you to all who attended - and we look forward to meeting new people at our next workshop!

Annual Fundraiser - A great success! Thank you!

The fundraising for the Wafa House on Wednesday April 29th was a great event.

The success is due to the collective work of all board members and fundraising committee.

Also, it would not have been possible without all the contributors and the generous donors. The community’s support is of paramount importance.

From North H
aledon, Mayor Randy George, Chief of Police Robert Brocco and Councilman Mike De Marco honored us with their presence.

From Paterson, Councilman Andre Sayegh and Fahim Abdrabbo from Congressman Pascrell office attended, and they both lightened up the evening.

Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire joined us for the evening and
supported our community as usual with his presence. The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Governor John Corzine. He was gracious enough to briefly attend the event even though he was not feeling well.

He promised to help as best he can to have the Wafa house succeed.

The two honorees, Mrs Barbara
Morris Price and Mr. Hany Mawla truly deserve to be honored. They give their time and efforts to the organization and we are truly grateful.

Senator John Girgenti could not attend but sent a Citation to each of our honorees. We thank him and his office for this gesture of support.

Judge Michael Diamond was our key note speaker. He was very clear about all the problems that he sees as a judge and how we can all help eradicate them from our community.

Poem - Domestic Violence

Please time how long (in seconds) it takes to read this poem.
I Got Flowers Today

I got flowers today.
It wasn't my birthday or any other special day.
We had our first argument last night,
And he said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me.
I know he is sorry and didn't mean the things he said.
Because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today.
It wasn't our anniversary any other special day.
Last night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke me.
It seemed like a nightmare.
I couldn't believe it was real.
I woke up this morning sore and bruised all over.
I know he must be sorry.
Because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today,
and it wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day.
Last night, he beat me up again.
And it was much worse than all the other times.
If I leave him, what will I do?
How will I take care of my kids?
What about money?
I'm afraid of him and scared to leave.
But I know he must be sorry.
Because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today.
Today was a very special day.
It was the day of my funeral.
Last night, he finally killed me.
He beat me to death.
If only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave him,
I would not have gotten flowers...today.
